Can You Drive After Laughing Gas

Patients often ask, “Can you drive after laughing gas.” And the answer, in most cases, is yes. Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, is the mildest form of sedation for dentistry!

Laughing gas is administered through a nosepiece and it can help make you feel relaxed (maybe even giddy) during your dental treatment. During the procedure, the amount of laughing gas that you are receiving is monitored, which helps ensure that you are always comfortable. As soon as you begin to inhale the laughing gas, you’ll feel the effects almost instantly. And once the flow of laughing gas stops at the end of the procedure, the effects of the sedation wear off quickly. You should feel completely alert again, within only a few minutes.

If, for some reason, you don’t feel alert enough to drive after your dental appointment, you can always spend time in the waiting room – reading, watching TV, or enjoying a cup of coffee or tea.

Because laughing gas is such a mild, yet effective, type of sedation, patients who are afraid of the dentist often choose laughing gas for cleanings, as well as other dental procedures and treatments.

It’s very important to make note that with the other two types of sedation for dentistry – oral sedation and IV sedation – you’ll need to arrange to have someone pick you up after your appointment, drive you home, and watch you for a few hours to make sure that you don’t have an adverse reaction to the sedation.
