Many times, when people believe that they’re experiencing a gum-related dental emergency, there’s actually a simple fix: floss.

If, suddenly, you feel pain around a specific tooth or teeth, it could be that something became stuck between your teeth or worked its way inside the gum tissue. If you carefully, floss, you might be able to dislodge the irritant, and the pain and swelling in your gums should soon subside.

If flossing doesn’t work, you should give us a call. We’re available for dental emergencies, and can generally get you in the same day that you call. We offer evening appointments and early morning appointments.

If your gums are bleeding, then there’s a chance that you have a dental infection, abscess, and/or chronic gum disease. Gum disease, if left untreated can cause tooth loss and/or other general health issues. Studies have shown that gum disease has been associated with heart conditions, strokes, systemic infections, and diabetes.

In general, gum disease slowly gets worse (often without pain), but there can also be times when it progresses quickly or flares up.

Prevention is the key to avoiding and treating gum disease – a multi-pronged approach that includes good oral hygiene at home (regular brushing and flossing) and deep cleanings and/or scalings (from a dental hygienist).

If it’s been awhile since you’ve been to the dentist, and you’re feeling anxious, don’t worry…we have three types of sedation available, which can make gum disease treatments easier.

It is better to be safe than sorry – if you believe that you have gum problems, please contact us.

We accept dental insurance from most PPOs (including Aetna, Delta Dental, MetLife, Guardian, and Humana). We don’t accept dental insurance from HMOs.
