Most people do not necessarily look forward to their trip to the dentist, but some folks suffer from severe levels of dental anxiety, or even severe dental phobias.
What is dental phobia? Dental phobia is the fear of receiving dental treatment and/or visiting a dentist, and it’s really more common than you may have thought. As dentists who offer sedation dentistry, we see anxious patients almost every day. This isn’t too surprising, given that as many as 14% of Americans delay or skip visits to the dental office because of dental fear or anxiety.
Dental phobia can stem from a general discomfort with dental treatment or procedures, or from something specific, such as:
•tooth or gum sensitivity
•strong gag reflex
•objection to hands in the mouth
•dental needles
•dental drills
•dental dams
•the sights, sounds, or smells of a dental office
The causes of dental phobia range from patient to patient, and they include:
•traumatic dental experiences in the past
•PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder)
•general anxiety or stress
•embarrassment (especially if it’s been awhile since the last dental visit)
•feelings of loss of control and/or helplessness
If the dental phobia is severe, patients often go for years without visiting a dentist, which can then lead to dental problems, as well as overall health problems. If you have dental problems that are in need of treatment, but are anxious about your next appointment, we get it and we can help.
Fortunately, sedation dentistry makes it possible for patients to tolerate treatment, without pain or discomfort.
Depending on the level of dental phobia, we’ll recommend:
•IV sedation dentistry
•conscious / oral sedation dentistry
•laughing gas / nitrous oxide
Which type of sedation dentistry is the best one for you? That depends on the dental treatment needed, as well as your level of anxiety or dental phobia. In a dental consultation, we can assess your dental health, make customized recommendations, and help you get back on track.
