In a dental consultation, we can talk to you about which sedation option may be best for you, depending on the treatment, your dental history, your level of dental anxiety, and your medical history.

There can be side effects with sedation dentistry…below is information so that you’ll know what to expect.

Nitrous Oxide / Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is the mildest form of sedation for dentistry. It’s administered through a nosepiece, and after your treatment is over, we give you oxygen to bring you back to full alertness.

Side of effects of nitrous oxide can include the following:
• feeling giddy or euphoric (thus the name, “laughing gas”)
• nausea
• dizziness
• vertigo

With laughing gas, you should be able to drive yourself home after your appointment. But if you do not feel fully alert and capable, you should rest in the waiting room and/or call someone to come and pick you up.

Oral Sedation / Conscious Sedation
Oral sedation, also known as conscious sedation, is the moderate form of sedation for dentistry. It is administered through a pill, which you take before your dental treatment begins. It helps you feel calm and relaxed throughout your dental visit, and time seems to pass quickly, with little or no memory afterward.

Side effects of oral sedation for dentistry can include:
• lack of concentration
• lack of coordination
• unsteady walking
• loss of appetite
• nausea

With oral sedation, you will need to have someone drive you home after your dental appointment.

IV sedation, also known as general anesthesia, is the deepest form of sedation. It’s administered through an IV in your arm, and the sedation is delivered straight into your bloodstream.
