Dental Implants vs Dentures

If you’ve one or more missing teeth and would like to restore your smile, dental implants and dentures are two of your many options.

While dentures have been around for centuries (George Washington had a set of false teeth!), dental implants are a relatively new innovation in the rapidly advancing field of dentistry.

Dentures are removable sets of teeth that can be placed in the upper jaw, lower jaw or both jaws. Today’s dentures are much more comfortable and attractive than those of yesteryear.

Dental implants have been widely used in dentistry for decades, and with each passing year, the materials and techniques continue to improve. Dental implants are posts that are imbedded into your jawbone, to which replacement teeth (crowns) are attached. Implants are permanent fixtures, which can last for decades with proper care and good dental hygiene.

Most people who choose dentures over implants do so because of the lower cost. However, dentures typically don’t look or feel as natural as dental implants. Also, you have to regularly remove and clean dentures, and sometimes people have trouble speaking and eating with dentures.

The main advantages to dental implants (as compared to dentures) include:
•appearance – they look more natural
•comfort – implants don’t slip around or click, like dentures can
•diet – you’re able to eat most types of foods
•care – you just have to brush and floss regularly
•keep your other healthy teeth – you can replace a tooth at a time with implants
•durability – dental implants can last for decades, with proper oral hygiene

There are also those instances in which we can combine dental implants and partial dentures – using the dental implants to anchor the dentures.

If you are considering having dentures made, before you take that life-changing step, come in for a consultation. During the consultation, we can talk about your dental health, your overall health, your goals for your new smile, and more.

Sedation can make the implant procedure more comfortable for you. It can also help immensely with extractions (if you need to have teeth pulled for implants or dentures).

Not many dental offices in the Denver metro area offer all three types of sedation for dentistry, but we do:

  • laughing gas (nitrous oxide)
  • conscious sedation (oral sedation)
  • general anesthesia (IV sedation)

If you are in need of dental implants or dentures and your dental anxiety has been stopping you from moving forward, we completely get it and we are here to help you.  We can also assist if you have broken dentures.
